Was
Jesus God - surely that was a later myth?
Since the earliest manuscripts of the gospels date back so near to the
time of Jesus - in fact some scholars date the originals as very early
indeed - there would have been eyewitnesses around to dispute anything
that was "just made up". In the gospels Jesus makes some startling
claims:
"Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a
truth thou art the Son of God." (Matthew
14:33) - and he
accepted their worship.
"He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for
he said, I am the Son of God." (Matthew
27:43)
"Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto
them, Ye say that I am." (Luke
22:70)
"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham
was, I am." (John
8:58)
"I AM" is God's
personal name (YHWH or Yahweh) He Who Is - and the Jews understood
this:
"The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but
for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God."
(John 10:33)
If he really said these things, then either: he was a liar and a
deceiver, or a madman - and deserved all he got - or he really was God.
If he did not say these things, then the gospel writers were liars, and
died unpleasant deaths for refusing to let go of their lies!
Now THAT is
unbelievable!
