Jesus
Christ - the Word of God
Is there any evidence that Jesus existed?
The gospel writers claim to be eyewitnesses:
Luke - "Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a
declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were
eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also,
having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to
write unto thee in order," (Luke
1:1-3)
John - "And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he
knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe."
(John 19:35)
The oldest manuscript of the gospels in existence today is dated 130
AD. - around 30 years after the death of the Apostle John. There are
around 4000 ancient manuscripts of the gospels in existence, but only
10 of Caesar's account of the Gallic Wars. There is far more
documentary evidence for the New Testament than for any other ancient
text.
Jesus "called Christ" is mentioned by the Jewish historian Flavius
Josephus (AD 37-101)
"Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he
assembled the sanhedrim of judges, and brought before them the brother
of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others;
and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the
law, he delivered them to be stoned:" Antiquities, Book 20, ch 19.
There are also other mentions in secular literature of the sect of the
Christians, who were causing problems to Roman governors.
